i'm lucy, or, as my website entails, 韩路希 (hán lù xī)!

… aka the super charming and awesome happy face drawer!

Here's another one liner about me other than the obvious fact that I am super charming and awesome and draw happy faces:

Born & raised in California (CA will always be home…), I'm a sophomore at Rice University studying the two incredible tools I use daily: computer science and cognitive science! I mainly design, but I like to think I "create" instead: creating products and relationships with the people I love and work with… both of which I try to do with a heart-first approach.

my design (and life) principles. aka me rambling

Throughout the 19-years I've tried and failed, I've learned a lot of lessons (the hard way). I put a lot of thought and care into my portfolio, so I thought it would be fitting to also share some of my favorite takeaways here. I apply these to my day-to-day and to the trinkets I create:

  • Me taking a picture with my favorite high school teacher during graduation, Mr. Markwalter!

    humble pride!!

This was first coined in my graduation speech and is often questioned: "What do you mean by humble pride? It's an oxymoron!"

But I still stand by it: my mindset in high school was unspeakably toxic, and it inevitably broke me down. I've learned so much since then… especially in an world and culture where it feels hard to impress even yourself, there's really nothing more important than finding value and love in the things you've achieved. Be proud of yourself! For yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!! RAHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • A letter from my dad on my 19th birthday! It's now taped on my wall: this really embodies lifelong learning for me.

    to pursue lifelong learning

Oh my goodness. LEARNING IS SO HARD!!!
Aside from the content being difficult (RIP DISCRETE MATH 🙏), I find it so easy to seek perfection when failure is inevitable or to avoid challenging, thought-provoking material because I feel incompetent… even as a student, where my job is literally just to learn! It requires taking apart my ego and sitting with the fact that I know… so much less than I think. I was so unaware about this when I was younger, but I'm striving to become more knowledgable about a variety of topics: especially towards my craft, towards design!

  • a heart-first mindset

I also mentioned this throughout my website, but I really want to emphasize this. I strive for my actions and work to all reflect some degree of empathy, gratitude… or just genuine care.

A bit embarrassing to say, but I used to think that being empathetic was my fatal flaw (LAME)… but I've realized that empathy is really one of the concepts that tie all of my interests together: design, coding, and leadership. If anything, I think that the ability to go about life with my heart on my sleeve is a treasured strength now.

A picture of my family! I suspect that they were the ones who engrained empathy into me, very thankful.

GRATITUDE IS SO IMPORTANT, and I am so blessed to be grateful for a lot of people… and designers in general. Below is a list of some the talented, lovely human beings who 1) have website/portfolio links and 2) have helped me succeed or made life more bearable (LOL).

Please check them out!

Rebecca Yee.
What an awesome human being. One of the designers I admire the most… and if I only had one person to ask for feedback on, I would choose her in a heartbeat! So attentive, she has saved my life so many times with sudden design questions or critiques. This portfolio would not be here without her.

Austin Lee.
Gave me ENDLESS help and support when I was applying to a fellowship despite never meeting me before. It's very rare to find someone so successful and so, so willing to lend an open hand. His portfolio is also so mindblowing, please take a look!

Allison He.
I call her my 姐姐 because she's so easy to talk to HAHA, but her feedback and work as a designer is incredible — I met her first when we worked together at a designathon! I also always admire how clean her designs are.

Anya Gu.
Not a designer, but she's a tech lead for my team in RiceApps… AND SHE'S THE SWEETEST PERSON EVER!!!! She really never fails to hype up her team, and she's by far one of the most genuinely skilled and sweetest person I know.
